Creepy Classics & Monster Bash News!

Saturday Morning Monsters

Just a quick flashback this week to those beloved Saturday mornings.

It was before old horror movies would start on Saturdays….we could still catch monsters in the morning cartoons….and believe me, I was always on the lookout for them!

The ones that come top of mind right now, in no particular order, include an early memory for me, MILTON THE MONSTER! This show might have been some of the earliest monster fondness for me and my six year old brain. It had a Frankenstein-styled Milton, whose head was open like a can, and all his monster friends. The show opened with a mad doctor pouring goop into a coffin shapped mold, and presto…Milton would form. I have such fond memories of myself cross-legged on the floor in our house on College Avenue in Grove City, PA watching this first run in 1966.

How about THE BUGS BUNNY SHOW that would feature guest stars like Gossamer (the big red-haired fuzzball monster with tennis shoes)? Witch Hazel (voiced by June Foray), Marvin The Martian, a Peter Lorre character as The Mad Doctor, Bugs doing a Frankenstein Monster impersonation…great stuff.

Of course, SCOOBY-DOO WHERE ARE YOU? with “the gang” meeting ghost pirates, haunted castles, mummies, witches…and, of course, The Creeper! Usually explained as evil-doers masquerading as spooky things, it still provided that early morning fix of ghouls.

One of my all-time favorites was the adventure cartoon show JONNY QUEST. Jonny, Hadji, Dr. Quest and Race Bannon would encounter Gothic scares, gill-men, mummies and 50s sci-fi styled things like giant robot spiders. Cartoon Monster Kid heaven.

Those are just some that came immediately to mind, I’m know I could come up with scores more…sorry if I missed your favorites. I probably loved them too! Ahhh, take me back, take me back. Cross-legged in front of that black-and-white Zenith TV watching cartoons and awaiting the monster movies that would come later.
