Greetings classic monster fans. It’s been a very long, weird and trying year for all of humanity. One things for sure, despite the many set backs that we are seeing in the world. I’m still glad that I live in a country and state where I’m allowed my freedoms. I stopped writing and producing monsters after midnight after I went into a slump (depression) about everything that was going on in The world. It appeared to me that we were almost living in a John Carpenter movie. And I still feel that way. I was also fairly disenchanted with certain things coming from Hollywood and disgusted with the politics that flooded the movie industry. So I stopped writing, let the blog lapse, shut down our Facebook page, left several online classic horror groups and sold off two thirds of my classic horror collection. You might say, I was just about done.
I’m originally from Chicago, and I’m a huge Svengoolie fan. So I still stopped by METV every Saturday evening and got classic monster fix. I also belong to a Svengoolie fan page online. I go on the Sven page a chat with fellow Sven fans while watching the movie nearly every saturday. I also stayed in touch with an online friend, Stefanie Yates. She is also known as Carlita from the online TV duo horror host team Drac and Carlita.
I began to see Stefanie posting snipits about various classic monster movies. I liked her personal touch. So I asked her if I could post these on monsters after midnight. And gave me permission to do so. Stefanie was an inspiration to me me. I appreciate her friendship and strength. On another note, despite being inactive most of 2021. Monsters After Midnight still managed to get around 3000 readers who stopped by. To our fans. I say thank you.

My film for today is “The Raven” starting Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff.
Next to The Black Cat, it’s one of the best things that Bela and Boris did together.
I always wonder, however, why Jack Pierce did such a BAD job on Karloff’s face 🤔 ???
And goodness!
Bela is every bit BELA— sinister, vengeful, romantic, dominating, and full of his usual sarcasm, accompanied by that little smirk.
He’s in VERY good form here.
And Louis Friedlander (Lew Landers) directed both these fellas beautifully.

My classic horror film for today is another of my absolute favorites—
The Phantom of the Opera (1925) starring Lon Chaney, Mary Philbin, and Arthur Edmund Carewe.
I remember the first time I saw this movie, the scene where Erik takes a stroll underwater to “send away the caller” really struck me. And fortunately, the print I saw of it had the most beautiful rooftop scene that I have ever found. The print quality and color was fantastic.
Well, you’ll get to see that gorgeous rooftop scene, if you like, on Halloween eve.

Creepy Classics & Monster Bash News! A Creepy Crawlers ChristmasThere’s one Christmas that comes back to me with a whiff of pungent hot plastic goop. Yes, indeed, Creepy Crawlers for Christmas. One of the best Christmas gifts ever for a creepy monster loving kid.We lived on Pine Street in Grove City, PA when I got the Creepy Crawlers set complete with the little electric oven and stock colored goop. In case (heaven forbid) you don’t know what Creepy Crawlers are…it’s a set where you could make bugs, spiders, snakes, bats, worms and such in multi-colors. You got metal molds to fill up with “Plasti-Goop.” You cooked them on a small oven (The Thing-Maker) and pried them out with pins, forks or paper clips. Presto, a little rubber bug.You could make loads of them and Mom and Dad could get you refills of goop at the store. What a dream-come-true. Making icky bugs to plant around the house, in baby sister’s room, or to smuggle to school. Even trade ones with other cool kids.I’ll never forget that first plunge in Creepy Crawlers on a Christmas Day in about 1966. It was in the kitchen, on the Formica kitchen table with the curved chrome corners. My dad and I whipping up those rubber bugs in bright yellows, reds and life-like black for spiders and ants. That strong, strong smell of Plasti-Goop rubber. Burning my finger on a not quite totally cooked lizard, the plastic still molten on part of it. Ouch.A later Christmas, after we had moved to State College, PA would bring the similar “Fright Factory” with even cooler monstrous things to make with Plasti-Goop. Shrunken heads, fangs, eyeballs, scars. Oh man, someone at Mattel Toys knew exactly what would bring joy to a young Monster Kid. Creepy Classics & Monster Bash News! Witnessing Santa Claus Vs. The DevilWhen I was a little kid in the mid 1960s it was common for parents to drop off their children at the local theater for a matinee on the weekend without worries. Mom could get shopping done while the little one was entertained with a cartoon, maybe a Three Stooges short and a “children’s movie.”The matinee movies I remember seeing were re-issues of THE 7TH VOYAGE OF SINBAD, THE MAGIC SWORD, TARZAN’S GREATEST ADVENTURE and the wonderful JOURNEY TO THE BEGINNING OF TIME. But the ones that really scared me were films based on classic fairy tales imported from Mexico and Germany…dubbed in English and packaged to appear like Disney movies. Producer/distributor K. Gordon Murray was one of the main forces behind these imports. From the movie posters and newspaper ads they appeared to Mom as just cute little movies. Well, they weren’t.These imports, dubbed in English, were much grittier and out right scary versions of LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD, HANSEL & GRETEL, RUMPLESTILTSKIN, SNOW WHITE AND ROSE RED and CINDERELLA. But, look out, for the holiday season there was SANTA CLAUS (imported from Mexico). One of the most memorable movies I ever saw when I was young.Mom dropped me off so she could probably do holiday shopping. This was 1965 or 1966. My baby sister was probably dropped off at my grandparents. But there I was, in a theater filled with other kids waiting for a cinematic assault that would scar me for life.SANTA CLAUS (shot in 1959) was in color and featured a presiding Santa in a mystical cloud hovering above the world. There was a mechanical Roto-Rooter like robotic snake with an electronic eye on the end that could see into kids rooms while they slept. Santa had slave children from all different countries in his workshop (though they seemed perfectly happy). There was Merlin the Wizard employed in Santa’s lab. Large lips that moved on a machine that ratted out bad kids. A little girl that dreamed of giant dolls with dead eyes…inspired by a guilt complex as she had thought about stealing a doll. A little boy was left home alone on Christmas eve while his parents went out to a holiday party. It was all the stuff of nightmares.Worst of all, the film took us into the bowels of Hell. There a red, evil devil called “Pitch” was set-up to return to the earth’s surface and stop Santa Claus and corrupt children. Which he proceeds to do through the movie…including setting vicious dogs loose to chase Santa up a tree at night.This Christmas horror flickered across the big screen as I sat, transfixed through its duration. Mom had no idea what she subjected me to. Shell shocked kids would shamble out of the theater squinting in the afternoon sun. They would not dare to ever be bad again, lest Satan send a minion up from Hades to torture them. Now the movie did have a happy ending…but what a trip it was down a dark path.I finally located this film on video sometime in the late 1980s. While it was (and is) scary and twisted…I am quite fond of it. The original 1925 silent film version of The Phantom of the Opera is the most famous version of the Gaston Leroux story of the disfigured and deranged Phantom who haunts the Paris Opera House. The film is most famous for Lon Chaney’s astounding performance and grisly makeup.
The film’s origins had begun in 1923 when the president of Universal Pictures, Carl Laemmle, had met author Gaston Leroux while on vacation in Paris. Leroux gave Laemmle a copy of his 1910 novel of Le Fantôme de l’Opéra when hearing that Laemmle was an admirer of the Paris Opera House.
Laemmle quickly bought the film rights with Lon Chaney to star as the monstrous Erik. Production began in mid-October of 1924 and the film was released on November 25, 1925.

Creepy Classics & Monster Bash News! Holiday Shopping The Toy Aisles…For MonstersIt’s November, Thanksgiving and KING KONG are on the way…more on that next week. There’s that cold wind and it feels like the holidays. It feels like shopping.A tradition when I was a kid…the family loading in the car and heading out for holiday shopping. Malls were relatively new. And that’s exactly where we were heading. I was bundled in my brown winter coat and a Charlie Brown styled hat with ear flaps. My sister in a white, with flowers print, hooded coat. Dad at the wheel of the blue Chevrolet and mom commandeering the shopping plans from the navigator seat.In the mall, Grants Department store was where the action was. This store had aisles and aisles of toys. I was released loose to cruise. My eyes beamed in on Creepy Crawler sets, Monster Makers, dinosaur sets, and ahhhh, amidst all the airplane and car models…the monster model kits! I scanned and scanned locating monsters, creepy things, weird board games and comic book characters like The Hulk and Thor on sparkle paint sets. I don’t know how Mom and Dad put up with the endless list of monsters I wanted (well, needed…as I would beg) for Christmas.Outside of the Toy Department there were two other locations I would gravitate to. Over in the photo and camera department there was a display of 8mm movies that featured condensed versions of the films I loved. Even though I didn’t have a projector (too expensive of a gift to hope for), I still liked looking. The other place was the pet department. There in aquariums were turtles, chameleons and baby alligators. Just cool to watch.Sooner or later I’d be dragged by one parent to shop for others. I now realize this ploy was so that the other parent could shop for me and my sister. I get it, I get it…now. My allowance, with help from the parents, would assist me in getting a wallet for my dad, maybe a colorful fashion scarf for mom, a Colorform set for my sister.It was quite the Saturday of shopping. An excitement that I can remember more than many of the gifts. Back at home there was the Sears and Montgomery Ward catalogs. Ready for my finely aimed pen to circle all those cool toys in there.It wasn’t the gifts, though I loved them at the time. Janet Ann Gallow Carried AwayWe will truly miss this wonderful lady. The ever smiling Janet Ann Gallow has passed away. Janet was the little girl, Cloestine, in THE GHOST OF FRANKENSTEIN (1942). She was one of the “Frankenstein Kids” and joined us many times at the MONSTER BASH conferences.We will miss you Janet and our most sincere condolences to her great husband, Dennis.This from MONSTER BASH magazine writer, Leonard Hayhurst:Former child actress Janet Ann Gallow has passed away, as confirmed by her husband, Dennis, on his Facebook page. She was 87. Gallow was born July 21, 1937, in San Jose, California.She’s best remembered for playing Cloestine in THE GHOST OF FRANKENSTEIN in 1942, opposite Bela Lugosi and Lon Chaney Jr. Cloestine befriends the Monster and he retrieves her ball from a roof. The Monster later kidnaps Cloestine and wants her brain inserted into his head.Gallow appeared in five other movies from 1942 to 1946. The parts were uncredited and had her playing a variety of random little girls. This included CANYON PASSAGE, THAT NIGHT WITH YOU, TIL WE MEET AGAIN, BUTCH MINDS THE BABY and IT AIN’T HAY with Abbott and Costello.She appeared at numerous MONSTER BASH CONFERENCES as a Guest of Honor.Her husband, Dennis Brookins, served as a negative cutter on a variety of Hollywood films from 1978 to 1991…..and now, photos of the fun from our past MONSTER BASH CONFERENCE shows! ‘My love has lasted longer than the temples of our gods‘ Imhotep (Boris Karloff)
Directed by the great cinematographer Karl Freund, The Mummy (1932) is one of the great films from the classic horror cycle that began at Universal with Dracula (1931). A huge success at the time, it would cement Karloff (billed by only his last name) as a huge star.
With Boris Karloff now hailed as the heir to the throne vacated by the death of Lon Chaney Snr (and incidentally and arguably missed out on by Bela Lugosi), opportunities for his talents were sought out after his film-stealing performance as the Monster inFrankenstein(1931). Like the Monster ‘created’ by Colin Clive, Karloff’s Imhotep would also be brough to life. However, unlike the determined doctor using science to bring his creature to life, the long-dead mummified body of Imhotep would be re-animated…
